LAMBORGHINI PRODUCES SURGICAL MASKS AND MEDICAL SHIELDS TO HELP FIGHT THE PANDEMIC

Automotive leader Lamborghini is converting departments of its super sports car production plant in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy in order to produce surgical masks and protective plexiglass shields. The masks will be donated to the Sant’Orsola-Malpighi Hospital in Bologna to be used in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Work on this solidarity initiative will be carried out by personnel of the saddlery that produce the interiors and specialty customization for Lamborghini cars, producing 1,000 masks a day. The medical shields will be realized in 200 units a day, using 3D printers within the carbon fiber production plant and the Research and Development department.

The activity has been approved and supported by the Emilia-Romagna Region, and is taking place in collaboration with the University of Bologna. The Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences will oversee validation testing of the medical devices made by Lamborghini, prior to their delivery to hospital.

Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, comments: “During this emergency, we feel the need to make a concrete contribution. The S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital is an institution with which we have had a collaborative relationship for years, through both professional consultancy in promoting programs to protect our workers’ health, and in research projects. We will win this battle together by working in union, supporting those who are at the forefront of fighting this pandemic every day.”

CES 2020: FORD TO PURCHASE AGILITY ROBOTICS HUMANOID

Ford has announced that it is purchasing a new two-legged, two-armed robot produced by Agility Robotics, which the car-maker hopes will soon be walking around neighborhoods carrying parcels from the delivery vehicle right up to your door.

Going by the name of Digit, the five-feet tall humanoid can navigate its way across urban settings ranging from sidewalks to flowerbeds in a surprisingly human-like manner, due to the mobile limbs attached to its upper torso. The uncanny valley effect is fortunately avoided thanks to the robot’s lack of a head.

Digit has only just gone on sale, and the reason that Agility can boast Ford as the very first buyer is that the robot provides a solution to the so-called “last 50 feet problem”. In the home delivery industry 2.0, those 50 feet are the final steps between the autonomous vehicle carrying a customer’s order, and that customer’s doorstep.

Ford’s interest in making driver-less delivery vans and pick-ups is not new. The car-maker has committed to providing autonomous vehicles “for commercial operation” by 2021 and has already teamed up with pizza maker Domino’s in Miami to deploy self-driving Fusion Sedans, vans, and SUVs to deliver meals.

Digit is designed to fold itself up in the back of the vehicle, pop out of the car trunk when needed, grab packages up to 40 lbs, and work its way to the correct door. But contrary to most delivery robots out there, such as those already deployed by Amazon or FedEx, Agility’s humanoid walks on legs, and not wheels.

Ken Washington, the vice president of Ford Research, said: “Gaining access to a customer’s door often requires walking through obstacles, including going upstairs and dealing with other challenges, which can be hard for robots with wheels to do. Digit has been designed to walk upright without wasting energy, so it has no issue traversing the same types of environment most people do every day.”

Teaching a robot to walk like a human is no easy task, even for an Oregon State University spin-out like Agility. In fact, the robotics company has been working on tailoring Digit to Ford’s delivery project for several months, in what was announced last May as a “research project” in partnership with the car-maker.

As part of the project, the two companies looked at ways to integrate their technologies, and it emerged that cars and robots did have much to learn from each other.

Ford’s vehicles, indeed, can provide both data and power. Not only can Digit recharge in the back of the car; the robot can also benefit from the vehicle’s knowledge of maps, of the surrounding environment – and therefore, of the best pathway to the customer’s front door.

“While Digit needs to function on its own,” said Washington, “the desire to keep it lightweight and capable of a dynamic movement led to an innovative idea: letting it tap the resources of another robot – one that’s equipped with advanced sensors and heavy computing hardware.”

And so, should Digit encounter an unexpected obstacle, the robot can send an image via its cameras and LiDAR sensors, back to the vehicle, and let the car configure a solution.

Washington added that the vehicle could even send that information into the cloud and request help from other systems to provide multiple levels of assistance to the robot.

Thinking forward, Ford said that the car could even send Digit-specific information such as where a customer prefers the package to be left or other delivery needs. The two technologies, therefore, would effectively be “talking” to each other.

So far, however, the project is still in its very early days, with Ford having purchased only two of Agility’s Digit. The car maker has not even started commercializing autonomous delivery vehicles yet. So, it doesn’t look like humanoid delivery men will be walking the streets anytime soon.

AUDI KICK-STARTS 2020 WITH THE LAUNCH OF Q8

Audi India kick-started 2020 with the launch of the Audi Q8 SUV on January 15, 2020. After an underwhelming 2019, the company has a slew of launches slated in 2020 beginning with the Q8 SUV. In fact, the car has already made its way to Indian shores ahead of its launch.

With the Q8, Audi India hopes to emulate the success that the company tasted with the Audi Q7. Audi India will also be launching the Audi e-Tron and the new-gen Audi Q3 in India throughout 2020.

Audi India has adopted a wait and watch for its diesel engines and therefore, we expect the company to launch the 55 TFSI Q8 model which gets a 3.0-liter V6 turbo petrol that makes 340 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. In all probability, the engine will be paired to an 8-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission. Audi’s patent ‘quattro’ AWD system will be standard of course. The Audi Q8 has a claimed 0-100 kmph sprint time of 5.7 seconds.

It is a visual delight, the Audi Q8, with the new, wide grille up front and the coupe-like roofline. The rear of the SUV is characterized by the slim LED tail lamps and the thin strip that connects the two units, giving the impression of having a single unit. The SUV also gets a 10.1-inch MMI touch response display on a piano black dashboard layout and another 8.6-inch digital display below for the air-con system and other in-car controls, while the instruments are shown in the fully digital Audi virtual cockpit. Other features include – adaptive cruise assist, efficiency assist, lane change warning, curb warning, and a 360-degree camera.

The Audi Q8 is the company’s flagship SUV and will be positioned above the Audi Q7 in India.

The Huracan Sterrato concept by Automobili Lamborghini conquers new territory

The Huracan Sterrato is Automobili Lamborghini’s way of exploring new horizons with its unconventional concept, based on the V10 Huracan, the Sterrato draws on Lamborghini’s off-road expertise that is illustrated in the Urus Super SUV, creating a sense of ‘fun to drive off-road’ and, a change of technology to create a super sports car for challenging environments.

The model concept is based on the Huracan EVO including the same 5.2 liter naturally- aspirated engine producing 640hp. The Huracan EVO’s LDVI (Lamborghini Dinamica Vericolo Integrata) has predictive logic, and this system integration manages the four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, modified suspension and torque vectoring, and system has more calculated guess of the driver to ensure perfect driving dynamics. Adjusted for off-road driving which includes low-adherence surfaces, and tuned to provide optimum traction and acceleration, the LDVI system in the Sterrato provides advanced rear-wheel-drive behavior, producing more torque together with additional stabilization during oversteer.

The brand has already explored the potential of combining Lamborghini’s high performance and off-road capabilities with the Lamborghini Jarama and Urraco during the 1970s.Bob Wallace Lamborghini’s test driver had tuned the two models in order to create a desert-going high-performance sports car, The Jarama Rally from 1973 and the Urraco Rally from 1974.
