KVK as an integral part of NARS

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is a planned project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and an integral part of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) of country. It aims at assessment of location specific technology modules in agriculture and allied enterprises, through technology assessment, refinement and demonstrations. KVKs have been functioning as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technology supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district and the NARS with extension system and farmers. The KVKs works at the grass root level with a district as its operational area. At present the country has 721 KVKs working under diversified organizations like ICAR institutes, State Agriculture Universities

Establishment of KVK-Lakshadweep

KVK-Lakshadweep is administered by ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Cochin. The KVK is situated in the capital town Kavaratti (10.5593° N, 72.6358° E) of Union Territory Lakshadweep islands. The KVK was established in 1999 and at first hosted by Department of Agriculture, UT Administration of the island. Later the KVK was hosted by (ICAR-CIARI) and at present under the administrative control of ICAR-CMFRI. Since 2019 activities of KVK have been carried out as per the approved action plan of ATARI, Zone VIII, Bengaluru.

Island/District Profile

The KVK falls in Island region of the classified agro climatic zone. The island is typified by tropical condition with little difference between mean summer and mean winter temperatures. The KVK works in the island with a population of 60,650 spread in 10 inhabited islands of Lakshadweep. These 10 islands are considered as blocks of the island. The principal crop of the island is coconut followed by banana, colocasia, drumstick, breadfruit and wild almonds. With the introduction of terrace gardening vegetables like tomato, brinjal, okara, few leafy vegetables are grown with soil less medium in grow bags. The terrace gardening in the island is getting popular in the recent years. The island is characterized as a coconut-basedfarming system providing bounteous scope of marketing dried coconut, production of value added and processed products. The island has rich marine fisheries resources. In short, the island is a Coconut and Tuna based economy. Blending these resources tourism is another significant activity which has a great potential to add value to the economy. Soils of the island are highly calcareous and sandy in nature. The activities of KVK covers an area of 32 sq.km encompassed within the 10 islands.
