Mandatory Activities

On Farm Testing (OFTs)

The KVK works on On Farm Trails (OFT) for the location specific testing of new technological innovations of ICAR and other R&D institutions. These trails are also called as Adaptive Trails. Every passing year the KVK identifies potential technologies generated by ICAR and R&D institutes for testing the location specificity and its suitability at micro farming situations. These technologies are procured and trailed out at the farmer’s field on a scientific basis. The trails are conducted at the farmer’s field with the guidance of Subject Matter Specialists of the KVK. This trial results of KVK are significantly transferred to the mainstream extension for further scaling up. This activity is very much unique within the different organisations working for agriculture development in the island. The KVK is repository of suitable technological innovations that can be disseminated to the end users. The OFTs undertaken by KVK during 2020-21 are as follows:

Title of On farm trailLocation of the trail Recommendations
Performance evaluation of Goats after feeding mineral supplementation and probioticsKavarattiFeeding on mineral mixture and probiotics is to be carried out after de worming.
Assessing the performance of high yielding tomato verity in Lakshadweep condition.KavarattiAvailability of seeds in correct time not to be assured.
Management of Mealy bugKavarattiThe percentage of pest reduction is more in Shreya (16.3%), and less in case of Nanma (23%) and Leacanicilliumlecanii (26%)

Front Line Demonstrations (FLD)

The Front-Line Demonstration (FLD) of the KVKs are unique developed by ICAR. In this activity KVK demonstrates the frontier technological innovations that are potential to the operational area of the island. Progressive farmers are selected and these technologies are demonstrated at their farms. The inventor scientist/experts on the technology under demonstration and extension officers of the UT administration working on agriculture and allied sectors are involved for better outreach. At the end of this activity, a field day is conducted at the farmer’s field to scale up the technology under demonstration for larger communities. The FLD’s undertaken by KVK during 2020-21 by the KVK are as follows:

Title of Front-Line DemonstrationLocation of the demonstrationRecommendations
Demonstration of Wick irrigation system for terrace cultivation of vegetables.Kavaratti
Demonstration of organic  manure production from fish wasteKavarattiBiobin is better than others.
Demonstration of fish silage production from Tuna waste.KavarattiOn going
Wealth from  Tuna fish waste- Waste conversion to Poultry feed.
KavarattiOn going
Demonstration of micro nutrient mixture “AYAR” in banana.Kavaratti

Training programmes

The training programmes of KVK is not a standalone activity. The trainings of KVK are linked with the On farm trail and front line demonstrations undertaken every year. The KVK organises certain training programmes are need based apart from linking with OFT and FLD. Apart from the mandatory training programmes the KVK also helps other organisations of the island to implement the training programmes which under the category of sponsored training programmes. The typology of the training depends on the contents and the course. The training programmes are organised for the farmers/farm women, rural youth and extension functionaries. Since few years the KVK organises training programmes that are sponsored by Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI) on selected trades with 20 beneficiaries extending to one month. Every year the KVK organises 72 training programmes benefitting more than 12,000 farmers.

Extension Programmes

Field days, kisan melas, farmer scientist interactions, diagnostic visits and surveys, farm and home visits, exhibitions, pre-kharif and pre-rabi sammelans, observing important days like World Soil Health Day, World Environment Day are the extension activities organised by the KVK. Popularisation of certain UT and central scheme using different extension methods are performed by the KVK.
