Sr. Consultant - Neurology

Dr. R. Sureshkumar is a consultant neurologist with more than 20 years experience in the field of neurology. He did his MBBS from Govt Medical College, Thrissur, MD in internal medicine from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore and DM in Neurology from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. He was the former professor of department of neurology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi and was a faculty there for 18 years. He has a vast experience in teaching and mentoring students. He is one of the pioneers in the field of Multiple Sclerosis in the country and set up one of the earliest and largest multidisciplinary Multiple Sclerosis Clinics in India, he also treats other demyelinating disorders like ADEM, NMOSD and MOG antibody related diseases. He is also experienced in managing Movement Disorders especially Parkinsons Disease (PD). He has expertise in both medical and surgical management of advanced PD and has involved in around 25 Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) cases and is also adept at DBS programming. Sleep medicine, cognitive neurology and headaches are his other areas of interest. He specialises in Polysomnography in sleep medicine and also neurostimulation, botulinum toxin therapy, as well as monoclonal antibody therapies for episodic and chronic migraine. He has been a Principle Investigator for 15 multicenteric international and national drug trials and also has done original research in areas of CSF proteomics and novel drug development in Multiple sclerosis. He has many publications in national and international journal and has also written book chapters. Currently he holds the position of the President, Cochin Neurological Society and has been a past treasurer of Kerala Association of Neurologists. He has won many awards and recognitions prominent among them being the Dr. Eapen Samuel Memorial Award 2012-2013 for the best research paper awarded by IMA AMS, Kerala chapter and he is the only Indian to deliver a talk at the prestigious European Charcot Foundation Symposium.
