All babies are precious whether born normally or by Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). Neonatology is a highly specialised branch of medicine that deals with the care of normal newborns as well as those born premature or sick babies. Advances in the field of neonatology have made possible survival of babies born at 24 weeks of pregnancy (5 ½ months) and also babies with birth weights as low as 500 grams in the level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). A good neonatology department consisting of experienced, efficient and compassionate medical and nursing staff is needed to provide care for these babies.
