Diseases affecting lungs are very common in our country. In fact more than 50 percent of patients attending a hospital have at least one respiratory symptom like cough or breathlessness. Some studies have shown that almost 25 percent of school going children in Kerala has asthma. Environmental pollution and smoking are directly affecting our lungs leading to diseases like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and Chronic Bronchitis. Tuberculosis is still rampant in our country affecting rich and poor alike. Life-style related problems like obesity can lead to diseases like Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, which if undiagnosed can cause various complications like excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty to control Blood Pressure and Diabetes.

Why Renai

Our experts in the Department of Pulmonology specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of lungs, airways, pleura, sleep related breathing problems and critical care.

Common Pulmonary diseases include:

  • Chest infections
  • Pneumonia
  • Asthma
  • Allergic disorders of upper airways
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • TuberculosisLung cancersLung fibrosis – interstitial lung diseases
  • Granulomatous lung diseases like Sarcoidosis
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Acute and Chronic Respiratory Failure etc

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Renai Medicity Hospital is manned by expert Pulmonologists with vast experience and extensive training in treating patients with most complicated problems and is equipped with the latest state of the art equipment.

Interventional Pulmonology

Interventional Pulmonology helps to diagnose diseases affecting lung tissues like cancer of lungs, to understand the organisms causing severe pneumonias, to collect phlegm for investigations in patients with dry cough, to take biopsies of the lung without surgery, to find out the cause of blood in sputum, to remove accidently inhaled foreign bodies like food or insects from the airways using small baskets or forceps.

Common Pulmonary diseases include:

  • Fibreoptic Video Bronchoscope
  • Foreign body removal
  • Trans-bronchial needle aspiration biopsy
  • Trans-bronchial lung biopsy
  • Broncho-alveolar lavage
  • Brush biopsies
  • CT and Ultra-sound guided percutaneous lung biopsies

Flexi-rigid Thoracoscopy

Some diseases affecting lungs can cause fluid collection in pleura, a thin space between lung and chest wall. Also small breaks or leaks on lung surface can cause collection of air in this space. To diagnose exact causes leading to fluid collection or air-leak, Thoracoscopy is indicated.

We at Renai have:

  • Flexi-rigid Thoracoscopy
  • Talc Pleurodehsis for malignant effusions and recurrent pneumothorax
  • Inter-costal Drainage tube insertions

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) Lab

Asthma and COPD are very common diseases causing breathlessness. To confirm the diagnosis, to know the severity of the disease, to assess how the disease progresses, evaluation of lung functions is very essential.

The PFT Lab is equipped with latest technologies including:

  • Spirometry
  • Lung Volume Studies
  • Diffusion capacity of Lungs
  • Arterial Blood Gases
  • Exercise testing – 6 min walk test
  • Exercise Challenge test

Sleep Lab

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is a common disorder associated with obesity and snoring. The patients feel very tired and sleepy during day time and tend to fall asleep while resting or sometimes even during activities like driving. Such persons are more prone for uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressures. Proper diagnosis and treatment of this condition will produce dramatic change in quality of life.

We offer:

  • Poly-somnography
  • CPAP titration studies
  • MSLT
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation

In collaboration with Departments of Physical Medicine, Psychiatry and Dietetics, Renai offers Comprehensive Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme for:

  • COPD
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Post-TB-Fibrosis
  • Interstitial Lung Disease and Cystic Fibrosis

We provide accurate diagnosis, therapy, patient education, psychological support and nutritional advice. Pulmonary Rehabilitation has proven benefits like reduced hospitalisations, better quality of life, improved exercise capacity and reduced respiratory symptoms.

Pulmonary Critical Care

Diseases like COPD, Asthma, ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), severe Pneumonias can cause very severe breathlessness with fall in blood oxygen levels and respiratory failure. These patients may require artificial respiration through mechanical ventilators for improving blood oxygen levels and to maintain functions of other organs.

At Renai, we have latest Invasive Mechanical Ventilators with graphics to assess lung functions breath-by-breath. Also Non-invasive ventilators (Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure ventilators) help to treat patients with less severe respiratory failure at lesser risk of infections and reduced costs.

Our Critical Care Unit have state-of-the-art facilities including Central Venous Pressure and Arterial Pressure monitoring, Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure monitoring, Haemodialysis etc
