Queen of the Arabian Sea is how the port city of Kochi or Cochin is mentioned in all tourism books. And it certainly lives up to its name. Being geographically almost the centre of the coastal State, Kochi has grown into a major hub of tourism and business. For those who want to enjoy the beauty of the backwaters, Kochi has it in abundance. Besides the Vembanad backwaters that opens out to the sea, there are other smaller backwater streams that lead in and out of the city and its suburbs.

The largest river of Kerala, the Periyar flows into the district on its last leg. One can catch up with the river at Kalady, the pilgrim spot of Saint Adi Sankara and Kodanad, where there is an elephant groove or move up to Bhuthathankettu where there is a bird sanctuary.

The Eastern belt of the district is still unspoilt by the commercial activity that the city of Kochi witnesses. A drive into the interior lands will give an idea of the major cultivation here – which is mainly rubber plantation and some pineapple too. One can go fishing at various spot.

For the spots to visit, there is the Hill Palace at Tripunithura, the seat of the erstwhile kingdom of the Kochi king; the Jewish synagogue and the Dutch Palace in Mattancherry, the Fort Kochi beach, Cherai Beach etc.
